Nicoll + Oreck Dance Theater
Brooklyn, New York
They Might Be Napping
Created by Jessica Nicoll and Barry Oreck
Nicoll+Oreck, of the stroller-headed, Frisbee-flying Hic+Nunc (2007 BIFF Encore Winner), present They Might Be Napping, a timely exploration of critical moments we might have accidentally slept through. Dancer choreographers, Jessica Nicoll and Barry Oreck, with improvisational actors Mike Durkin and Laura Livingston, create a unique blend of illusion, physical theater, and virtuosic dancing. Described as “performance art that is still accessible - endearing, beautiful and funny” (2007 BIFF on-line), Nicoll+Oreck offers a varied repertoire ranging from the quietly serious to the frenetically absurd. They draw on a partnership of 25 years and a repertoire by a range of choreographers. In They Might Be Napping the personal is the political –things we ignore and forget, how we wiggle and spin what we don’t want to face. The performance unfolds in a set of shifting realities that highlight Nicoll+Oreck’s “gift for social commentary of the sustained loopiness variety” (Gowanus Wildlife Review). This year’s program includes Phyllis Lamhut’s 2001 DoRag in which “something doesn’t happen.” This fast-moving hour promises to be another Fringe crowd-pleaser.

Loved it!

Lynn Grasberg  5 Stars!
I loved this show. The choregraphy, dancing and comic acting are brilliant and funny. Great parody of cultural patterns and dance conventions.

jennifer  4 Stars!
Good-- but slow and not very compelling in the middle 20 minutes or so-- a little underdeveloped there. Loved the last 20 minutes.

Tom Hast  5 Stars!

Jenny  5 Stars!
Subtle - poignant- whimsey

Mary  4 Stars!
GREAT group of performers, yet the show felt uneven from piece to piece. They did so many different things words, dance, magic, props, there is plenty for everyone. Worth seeing!

E. Rose  5 Stars!

Great beginnings undeveloped in most cases. The contact improv is so impressive I wanted to see more. The headlamp piece had moments of brilliance but then was suddenly morphed into the next piece so we didnt get to love it. Develop this piece!!! The hand thing, the play on civic rules - very cool opening, great sections, could have watched this one longer. pacing and transitions weird. audience relationship with performers made it more fun.
