CLEAVE
Written by Randy Kaplan & Brian Schey
In the Beginning there was musical comedy? Why not? Some folks may be scandalized by this conceptual play about the creation of the world and our mythic prototypes. But the situations depicted here are based on medieval commentaries on The Book of Genesis. Blame those stodgy rabbis from the Middle Ages for the hermaphrodites, incompetent angels, and brushes with bestiality! In CLEAVE, the angels are a bickering lot that could just as well be working as low-level employees in some massive corporation, unaware of their unseen CEO’s long-term goals or plans. Adam and first wife Lilith are cleaved apart; along with Eve they form a Biblical love triangle. The animals know that if Eve eats the apple she’ll leave her innocence behind, along with her vegetarianism. Questions of fate and free will drive our Chief Angel crazy and lead him to defection (and song and dance). The book and lyrics are literate and funny, the music eclectic and moving. Seductive cha-cha, baroque lamentation, and vaudevillian waltz suit the sorority girl Eve, the barren demon Lilith, and the clueless newborn Adam. Laugh with the Humankinds as they grow up and move out.Photo credit: www.lifeexposedphoto.com

Really clever and witty show about the origins of the species. Do we ever overcome the separation from our other, lost half, and was leaving Eden behind all for the best? Is our Maker pulling strings while we think were making the decisions? Wonderful music and lyrics, and an appealing, talented cast make for an enormously satisfying theatrical experience of timeless matters.

I saw the performance on Saturday evening 8/16. The production was very well done. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire story line. The writing was excellent ad the actors portraying each character fit very well. I especially liked the parts of Adam and Eve. Their ongoing story line was great to follow and I especially loved the song as the animals were being presented to Adam as choices for a mate.
The woman who played Lilith has an amazing voice and was reflected through the many musical numb

Great cast and performances. However, as a musical, the songs tended to sound the same, and it really needed a choreographer and costume and set designers even to do more with less, so to speak. Also felt like they could have really dug deeper with the content - the songs and scenes sometimes felt like lite musical comedy. Will look forward to this growing more in the future.

There were very talented people performing with semi-interesting content. Found myself bored at times, especially with the cheesy humor.
