Cindy Marvell, Artistic Director of the Boulder Circus Center, turns gravity on its head in this tour-du-frenzy of the new vaudeville world as seen through the eyes of a juggler. What inspired an English major to become the first woman to win the International Jugglers’ Association’s Championship, touring with San Francisco’s Pickle Family Circus and the Off Broadway show Lazer Vaudeville? Did poets like William Blake, W. B. Yeats, and Andrew Marvell predict that their work would be juggled to? Is the evolution of the club, ring, ball, hat, diabolo, hoop and devil stick as integral to the galaxy as the survival of dinosaurs? Marvell grew up in the wake of the new vaudevillians, those circus renegades and scholars turned variety entertainers. Now she juggles to revive the struggle towards legitimacy of the art form. Original music and juggleography round out this display of mysterious marvels. Dynamite manipulation, magical skills, and flippant precision make “A Juggling Journey” the toss of Pearl Street. Come prepared to watch, wonder, and pick up props! There may even be some Shakespeare thrown in. According to The New York Times, Marvell alternately “juggles like a poet” or “a shimmering golden princess in some children’s book.”
