The Crane Wife

Adapted by Margarita Blush

The Crane Wife is a puppet theatre production for all ages, based on the Japanese folk tale retold by Odds Bodkin. Inspired by Japanese folklore, aesthetic, and theatre forms, the show creates an enchanting atmosphere to take the audience on a mystical journey. A shadow screen comes to life with images of the rising sun and the changes of the seasons. Haiku poems enrich the narration. Beautiful, hand-crafted puppets portray this powerful story of love, trust, and greed.
The Crane Wife is created by an international team of exceptional artists – adapted and directed by Bulgarian-American director Margarita Blush (who also performs in the show), three American performers – Gregg Tobo, Betsy Tobin and Robert Blush, a Bulgarian scenographer and master puppet maker – Dimitar Dimitrov, and an American musician with expertise in Japanese music – James Hoskins.
The fusion of Eastern and Western theatre forms is overwhelming in its simplistic beauty and has a profound effect for the audience. The performance is elevated by the strong script, overall craftsmanship and the use of intercultural theatre practices.

    Beautifully done and meaningful. Touching.

It makes me thing that puppets are perhaps the best way to act out a folk tale.

Problems: 1) The height of the puppets made some sight lines difficult, which you would not expect in that theater. 2) There was really no suspense. It was given away by the title.

My ten-year-old son, Daniel, who saw the performance today says:

“I liked it because it had an interesting story. I liked it all. I would recommend it to all ages.”

An amazing and breathtakingly beautiful show. My nine year old daughter and her friend loved the show as much as I did. I highly recommend this show to everyone young and old. This is a rare opportunity to see this style of puppetry and live music performed so expertly.

A fluidity between performers and puppets. Margarita’s expression/tenderness flows through Yukiko. A lesson we can all learn from man’s greed. Human’s can never seem to have enough and a thing of beauty is so easily destroyed due to it. BRAVO to a touching production. Loved the sounds, music and puppet workmanship also.

Production value is very high and the actors do a fine job with the story. The problem with the show unfortunately is that while the story is beautiful and touching it is too slow and drawn out and in return I got fidgety as did other members of the audience. It would help to tighten up the beats and awkward pauses in the show.

What a wonderful experience! Everything about it seemed to be just right. A glimpse into another culture and time, the whole production was gripping and clever. The music and sound effects were icing on the cake!

A beautiful and elegant set, wonderful live music scoring and sound effects, a story told with the economy of great poetry, the use of back projection that is always in service to the narration, excellent stage business with a set of Japanese scrolls, a gorgeous female puppet, and a story that made me cry. This play will resonate with you for a long time after you leave the theater.

What a beautiful story, told in a beautiful manner, by a collection of beautiful artists! While every part of this remarkable performance quite frankly touched my heart, the fact that so much humanity was captured by these puppets (and their puppeteers) was a revelation!
    Do not miss this opportunity!

So beautifully and expertly done. Grace and strength. Any stagecraft fans out there? The economy of the set …so much beautiful imagery accomplished with so little. And the live music so well done. Congratulations on a beautiful show.

Elegant and charming. The puppets faces and hands are mesmerizing in their conveying of the story’s emotions. The music and background scenery greatly enhance the storytelling.

Heart-breakingly beautiful. Deeply infused with grace and universal truth. I was drawn into an exquisitely sublime and refined world – mythic, poetic, magical…beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. I was inspired, transported, enlivened and confronted. Tears of grief and joy. The performances were amazing…humans and puppets both. I deeply appreciated the spaciousness, stillness, simplicity and subtlety. I was in awe of so many aspects of this show. This is what fringe is about – this is what theatre is about. I will definitely see again. Don’t miss it!

Beautiful show. I forgot at times that I was watching puppets, as the grace, movement and emotion conveyed in story was so real. So glad I was able to experience this amazing piece of art.

Such a sad yet moving story. A bit too slow for my taste, but guess that’s the style. Loved the music! Wish story had been clearer that there was a marriage (it was assumed), wish the puppets were taller, wish puppeteers wore black gloves. Otherwise, excellent production.
