2021 Boulder Fringe ARTIST Application


As everyone should know by now we are in the middle of a global pandemic and as such, our festival may still operate but we all need to stay within the local guidelines and conditions as set forth by city, state and county health oUcials. WE RAN THE FESTIVAL IN 2020 AND HAD A GREAT EXPERIENCE WITH ARTISTS AND AUDIENCES. We were able to charge for tickets to live shows, socially distanced events and online events and had a surprisingly great response from artists and audiences. This year we will be offering live and pre-recorded events through the Zoom platform as well as some very site-specific live performances in the local Boulder community that will also be live streamed to audiences all over the world. As we are in very unpredictable times with regards to contact and space availability for live performances - we reserve the right to VETO/Cancel any performance that places artists, audiences, crews or other community members at risk. Please review the current local standards and laws regarding the current pandemic. FINAL PROGRAMATIC DECISIONS WILL BE MADE BY JUNE 15TH 2021 about which live performances may move forward and in which manner. Please list any special needs you may have in regards to lighting, sound, video, type of aoor (dance), ceiling height, microphones and scenic elements. Be sure to list anything that will affect the choice of venue and/or enhance your production. Please be very speciUc with regard to what you need and what you will bring. If your needs go beyond our capabilities you will be contacted to discuss alternatives. **Please remember the Boulder Fringe DOES NOT guarantee that these tech needs can or will be met. Additionally, many venues have cement or carpeted aoors. If this is a concern please contact us to discuss possibilities. Fire is not allowed. If you want to be a part of the Fringe and the use of smoke or Ure is essential to your show, you will need to arrange a Site-SpeciUc BYOV.

BYOV Only ("Bring Your Own Venue")

Boulder Fringe will accept applications for Bring Your Own Venue (BYOV) productions for site-specific work and other rented venues (arranged between the artist/group and the venue). IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT ARTISTS WORK within the "downtown cultural corridor" in Boulder, Colorado. This is typically in the area between 2nd St and 28th St (West to East), the University of Colorado (Baseline Rd - South, and Valmont Ave/Balsam St to the North) - there may be exceptions but this can be very risky for the artist/company since most of the Fringe presented shows will occur in downtown areas. Past BYOV's have included Trident Cafe, Wesley Chapel, Dairy Arts Center, Boulder parks and Open Space, Boulder Creek, Please contact [email protected] if you have questions.


As we are in very unpredictable times with regards to contact and space availability for live performances - we reserve the right to VETO/Cancel any performance that places artists, audiences, crews or other community members at risk. Please review the current local standards and laws regarding the current pandemic.

Applicants must submit a one-page venue/project description to [email protected] by February 17, 2021 which includes:

  • Your proposed venue

  • Short show description/synopsis

  • Answer the question: Why this show in this particular space?

  • If applicable, list any other artists/companies with which you plan on sharing the space.

    *** Please note that we are reviewing descriptions so that we can help you determine what is in your best interest in terms of location. This is NOT a juried review.

    Proposed venues should be within reasonable distance of the main Fringe site (Trident Cafe, 940 Pearl St in Boulder, CO) so that audiences can easily travel between shows live shows. Please contact [email protected] if you have questions about this.


If you chose a BYOV, and have not secured a venue yet, please provide a brief description of the venue you hope to use and what you'll need in order to stage your show there.

If you are accepted in a BYOV slot, you are responsible for securing your venue, your technician and any technical equipment your show might need. NOTE: If you’re not applying for a BYOV, just hit “Next” to move on to the next step.


We require that you schedule performances starting no earlier than 12 noon and ending by no later than 10 pm on any given day, to keep shows in the same time window for Box Ofce coverage. The scheduling of ALL shows begins the evening of Thursday, AUGUST 12th and runs through Sunday, AUGUST 22 - 2021 at 6pm on closing night. ALL shows must be done by 10pm each night from AUGUST 12-21).

BYOV applicants will be reviewed and placed by February 21, 2021.
You may not submit more than one BYOV application to the Boulder Fringe.
BYOV companies must provide a signed agreement with the proposed venue by May 1, 2021.

BYOV companies agree to provide Fringe Festival staff reasonable access to the venue upon request, to ensure that the venue is safe for audiences, performers and volunteers and that it meets the standards of the Boulder Fringe.

Acknowledgment of Fees & Policies

In response to critical feedback from traveling artists and general response to the current pandemic, we are rolling out a NEW FEE structure in an effort to make parts of the festival more accessible to local and traveling artists. We are also able to offer deferred payment of production fees for a limited number of artists who wish to participate but cannot come up with the funds in advance (please contact [email protected] if you cannot manage the up-front Production/Listing fees. Up to 10 deferrals will be provided on a case by case basis. ALL APPLICANTS must pay a non-refundable (reduced) $25 application fee. Fees that are deferred will be collected later in the year after that artist/company has had the chance to earn their BOX OFFICE proceeds. 
Please check out the application with new fees when it goes LIVE at 9:00am MST on December 15th.


Application Processing Fee *

The non-refundable APPLICATION PROCESSING FEE of $25 must be paid as the last step of this application form. This fee covers administrative costs of processing applications and hosting the public lottery. Your application will not be considered valid unless this fee is paid the SAME DAY of application (THROUGH THE PAYPAL LINK PROVIDED BELOW).

Listing Fee *

The LISTING FEE of $100 covers costs of being listed in the Fringe program and on the website, as well as Festival coordination and promotion. This fee will be due on February 21, 2021 along with the PRODUCTION FEE.

Production Fee *

The PRODUCTION FEE covers cost of venue, box oece services, venue site management, technician, volunteer coordination and basic equipment for up to six shows. (LIVESTREAM ONLY AND BYOV does not include a tech manager, venue, streaming service or equipment and has a lower fee. This fee is due on February 21, 2021 along with your LISTING FEE).

$75.00 - LIVESTREAM ONLY (Artist Provides Live Streaming Platform, Facebook Live, Zoom, Etc) -  I acknowledge that this fee must be paid on or before 2/21/21

$150.00 - BYOV (Bring Your Own Venue for site-speci]c work) - I acknowledge that this fee must be paid on or before 2/21/21

$200.00 - ZOOM/REMOTE LiveStream VENUE (25-95 "VIRTUAL seats") - I acknowledge that this fee must be paid on or before 2/21/21

$550.00 - LIVE VENUE (25+ seats) - I acknowledge that this fee must be paid once the LIVE VENUES are con]rmed for the season (because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, this could be as late as May 31st, 2021)


Add-On Zoom and additional Show Fees *
For Zoom venues and remote audiences we have the option to upgrade audience size and storage for

recording shows. Please let us know if you would like to add any of the following:

$50.00 - Additional BYOV Showings (per added show up to 8 total showings) - I acknowledge that this fee must be paid on or before 2/21/21

$35.00 - ZOOM VENUE SEAT ADD (up to 495 "VIRTUAL seats") - I acknowledge that this fee must be paid on or before 2/21/21

$25.00 - RECORDING OF up to 6 LIVE SHOWS (up to 12 Gigabytes of storage kept on Server until 9/30/2021) - I acknowledge that this fee must be paid on or before 2/21/21


I understand that my show cannot exceed 60 minutes in Fringe Programmed Venues and 90 min in BYOV's. *

If accepted you will have an opportunity to give us more detailed scheduling needs but please plan to be available for the entire 12 days from August 11– 22, 2021. If you have scheduling conaicts, be aware that those will greatly reduce your venue and show time options, and may reduce your allotted number of shows.
